The Other Boleyn Girl
Some strong performances, but with some irritating features. The hand-held camera effects - a bit like ‘This Life’, I felt, with lots of cutting back and forth - and then asides to camera as though Anne and Mary Boleyn were nipping off to the ‘Big Brother’ Diary room.A more important flaw was the lack of development of the religious or political themes - these were seen as background to purely personal conflicts - and, other than early in the film when the Boleyn family are shown discussing how to maintain influence at court - not the driving force behind events.The ‘break with Rome’ - for example - is mentioned in passing by Anne in a ‘Diary Room’ episode as though it is about as significant as next week’s BB evictions, rather than as a defining episode in European history.

“Merlin” Casts its Spell
I was excited to see “Merlin” finally reach stateside lastnight on NBC, and it was a great fantasy romp that I’d definitely recommend you check out. It stars the adorable Colin Morgan as Merlin, who has to keep his magic in the closet while protecting Arthur from the latest villain in each perilous adventure every week. Arthur, played by the handsome Bradley James (which I snagged some shirtless pics from another series), is very much the entitled frat boy prince who Merlin initially can’t stand, but there is some instant HoYay between the two, that even TV Guide could pick up on, so we can watch as the two got much closer as the series moves forward! Can’t wait for yet another two hours of “Merlin” next Sunday!

Get Over It
In the new tradition of taking a classic work and casting it as a high school romance (I guess this tradition began with “Clueless”, which is still the best of the bunch), “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” gets turned into “Get Over It”, but as a nice (if occasionally heavy-handed) twist, the movie revolves around a high school production of that play. The really funny moments are provided by Martin Short as the nut-case head of the theatre department, and Ed Begley, Jr. and Swoosie Kurtz as the nut-case sex-therapist parents of the male lead. (There is also some nice slapstick involving a hapless exchange student and some unusually humiliating accidents involving the male lead.)The leads, Dunst and Foster, are solid. I’ve always liked Foster, and he is quite good here, and Dunst has a surprisingly nice voice (unless she was dubbed, but I think that it was her voice). Anyway, it’s pleasant, occasionally inventive within the rigid confines of the genre, and has a few enormous laughs in it.
